About the JJ/WBGSP Scholarship
The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program is funded by the Government of Japan and administered by the World Bank. The scholarship supports talented professionals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to development work and wish to enhance their skills through graduate-level education.
For the 2026 intake, the scholarship supports 44 participating master’s programs offered by 24 universities worldwide in areas such as:
- Economic Policy Management
- Infrastructure Management
- Tax Policy
- Public Administration
- Development Studies
- Environmental Management
- Agriculture and Rural Development
- Public Health
- Other development-related fields
Applicants must first obtain admission into one of the participating master’s programs before they can apply for the scholarship.
Scholarship Benefits
Successful candidates will receive:
- Full tuition fees
- Monthly living allowance
- Round-trip economy airfare
- Travel allowance of USD 600 per trip
- Health insurance coverage
- Support throughout the study period
The scholarship covers the duration of the graduate program or up to two years, whichever is shorter.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a citizen of a World Bank member developing country
- Hold a bachelor’s degree earned at least three years before the application deadline
- Have a minimum of three years of paid development-related work experience
- Be employed in a development-related field at the time of application
- Be admitted unconditionally to one of the JJ/WBGSP participating master’s programs
- Demonstrate commitment to returning home after graduation
- Be in good health
Preference is given to candidates who have not previously studied in the United States.
Selection Criteria
Applications are evaluated based on:
Professional Experience (30%)
Relevant development-related work experience and demonstrated impact.
Professional Recommendations (30%)
Strong references from supervisors or professional contacts.
Commitment to Development (30%)
Evidence of dedication to contributing to national development.
Academic Background (10%)
Academic performance and educational achievements.
