Position Summary
The Sports Director will lead the design, implementation, and management of adaptive sports programs across Rwanda. The role requires extensive experience working with persons with intellectual disabilities and a strong commitment to inclusive sports development.
The successful candidate will coordinate sports events, develop coaches, support athletes, build partnerships, and ensure compliance with Special Olympics standards.
Key Responsibilities
Sports Program Management
- Develop and manage national sports programs.
- Coordinate sports calendars and competition schedules.
- Organize regional and national tournaments.
- Lead athlete participation in Special Olympics Africa and World Games.
- Support team preparation and competition management.
Athlete Development & Support
- Implement adaptive sports methodologies.
- Ensure accessible and inclusive sports programs.
- Monitor athlete participation and well-being.
- Promote Unified Sports and athlete leadership initiatives.
- Maintain athlete eligibility and medical records.
Coach & Volunteer Development
- Recruit and manage Sports Management Teams.
- Conduct coach education and certification programs.
- Coordinate sports officials and volunteers.
- Ensure compliance with Special Olympics coaching standards.
Partnerships & Advocacy
- Build partnerships with schools, universities, federations, NGOs, and government institutions.
- Advocate for disability inclusion through sports.
- Represent SOR in sports and disability forums.
- Strengthen relationships with athletes, families, and stakeholders.
Reporting & Administration
- Prepare program reports and athlete statistics.
- Support grant reporting and proposal development.
- Maintain compliance with Special Olympics guidelines.
- Contribute to organizational planning and development.
Qualifications
Applicants must possess:
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Sports Management
- Sports Science
- Adapted Physical Education
- Special Education
- Business Administration
- Related field
Master’s Degree is an added advantage.
Experience Requirements
Candidates must have:
- Minimum 3 years of direct experience working with persons with intellectual disabilities.
- Experience in adaptive sports programming.
- Experience organizing sports competitions and events.
- Proven leadership and team management experience.
- Experience managing coaches, volunteers, or sports personnel.
Required Skills
Successful candidates should demonstrate:
- Strong understanding of disability inclusion.
- Knowledge of adaptive sports and athlete development.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Strong planning and organizational abilities.
- Stakeholder engagement and partnership-building skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda.
- French language skills are an added advantage.
